Award Modernisation: What will it mean for COSS Members?  Following the announcement of a pay equity test case to be run by the Australian Services Union (ASU) with  the support of the Commonwealth Government, the  Australian Industrial Relations Commission has agreed to put on hold implementation of the modern award until 1 July 2011. TasCOSS Workforce Development Project 2009 - 2010
Consultation with community sector organisations and peak bodies and a scan of the literature identified organisational culture as an aspect of work force development that has been under-researched in this state.This project explored the major issues relating to recruitment and retention of staff in the community services sector. In particular, examining  connections between organisational culture and worker satisfaction and how this impacts on willingness to continue to work for an organisation. 
This work is undertaken as part of the TasCOSS contract with the DHHS and was ormed by the Community Services Industry Plan which lists as a major priority the need to secure a workforce for the future. The plan recognises that one of the key elements to achieving this goal is that “organisations must be equipped to support staff, and to ensure their health and wellbeing in the workforce.”

What’s culture got to do with it? organisational culture research project report  The TasCOSS organisational culture research project conducted unstructured interviews with 22 senior staff of nine case study organisations and surveyed 84 paid workers and 29 volunteers.To download the project report click here.

The CS&H Industry Skills Council, Conditions, recruitment and retention in community services
The CS&H Industry Skills Council (CSHISC) is investigating the workforce challenges identified in the 2010 Environmental Scan, in particular the issues surrounding them and the individuals and organisations dealing with them on a daily basis ‘at the coal face’. This article looks at recruitment and retention in community services. (CSHISC) spoke with Kate Davidson, CEO of Community Colleges Australia, about a positive story they were able to share about one adult entering this industry. 

Tasmanian Disability Services Sector Workforce Development Strategy
This strategy is the beginning of a collaborative partnership between government and nongovernment disability service providers to address workforce planning for the disability services sector.This strategy provides a framework to establish a committed approach to workforce development including a focus on learning and development activities, and developing sustainable recruitment and retention enabling the disability services sector to build a culture where workforce development is seen as an investment for the future.

Workforce Planning Toolkit - Produced by the Queensland Government, this free toolkit, available online, provides managers with development support across a range of people management practices, such as recruitment, performance management, training and skill development and management development. While specifically produced for managers within the Queensland Disability Sector, many of the resources are usefuland generally applicable in other contexts.

The Association has been active in Melbourne, Australia, since the early 1990s. Founded initially as a means to bring work and family awareness to small business through employer organisations, it has evolved as primary point of contact on work/life matters able to meet the diverse needs of organisations both large and small across all industry sectors.
